I’m working with the Utah Whig Outreach Program — something the other Whig and I came up with our last meting. You can us at

We’ve got our first meeting coming up tomorrow, September 28, and we’re trying to get regular monthly meetings in Salt Lake City for Whigs. Hopefully this will help establish the party on its way to growing here in Utah. Any other Whigs that have had experience growing the party in their respective states, please contact the email above with your suggestions.

I’m meeting with another Whig here in my state today. We’re working through the regional chair to start building the party here. If any of you are/have worked on building the party in early stages, what suggestions do you have?

This reminds me of an off-handed article I read in Mental Floss that mentioned Edgar Allan Poe submitted a piece to a journal dubbed “The American Review: A Whig Journal of Politics, Literature, Art, and Science”. So I find it quite clever that you created “The New American Review”. A great opportunity lies ahead of us if we can harness the ebullient energy present and translate into action within our communities, and this can be a nice first step. I am more than willing to lend my pen and other unrefined services, but I don’t possess much qualifications if no one minds. Hopefully we can eventually include literature, art, and science to assert ourselves as patrons of the arts like our Whig forefathers as well the sciences (though that may need to wait until we are able to do print distribution). Doing so may, if fortune smiles upon us, make us more than a political movement, but a movement that can shape the very American identity itself.

Mr. Zicha, I’d be more than happy to assist you in the development of your Whig Journal. I see myself as an avid writer and have been looking for ways to lend my services to the party outside serving as the Vice-Chairman for South Carolina. I can be contacted at if you’d be interested in having me.

James – feel free to e-mail me. I had the same idea for the blog I just set up. I have about 7-8 posts on deck in some stage of development… plus what’s there.

I’ll have a more involved reply for MW West Region in a bit.

This party is chock-full of writers…

And, of course, we are not the only ones…

Everyone know what the problems are. They need to be SHOWN solutions. Many who read one of those articles, blogs, posts, etc. and then says “YES!” goes looking for who is actually going to make it happen and how. And there, we are all lacking.

I can get a 25% read rate on one of my update e-mails, and for a political e-mail that is pretty good. For every one of those e-mails I will get maybe two people who will reach out and ask what they can do.

Those are the people who are going to be standing on street corners, in front of city hall, and outside the grocery store handing out flyers and putting candidates, ballot initiatives, petitions, etc. (SOLUTIONS) in front of people.

If we truly want to change things, and show others how we are different, we need far fewer people writing about the problems and theoretical responses and more people providing the solutions.

Hearts and minds. The competition is doing it…

I’ve actually been thinking that getting people writing and sharing their thoughts is exactly what we need for some publicity. When I first learned about this party a few weeks ago, I was very excited about the idea and eager to read more about it. I became a little discouraged after googling around and not finding very much written recently about the Whig party.

I think it would be a great idea to get Whigs from across the nation writing about political philosophy and national issues from a Whig perspective. I’m almost thinking something along the lines of “member opinion pieces,” perhaps with some minor vetting to make sure they fall in line with core Whig values. Articles that explain a bit about the Whig party or why one has chosen to become a Whig are good, but I think even better would be opinion pieces on specific issues and government policy, the sort of thing that can possibly get published in local or national newspapers or periodicals. I think that would be a very effective means of showing what Whigs are and getting our name out there in the mainstream consciousness.

Matthew Fife raises a good point. I am looking for bookish, wonkish Whigs, along with passionate essayists to participate on my newly minted blog:

With luck, we can produce content that we can share on social media and will be reshared. Free publicity. That’s my immediate contribution. Please contact me via the blog if you want to participate!
