Q: Please elaborate on your choice and position...
A: It all begins with electoral reform, which encompasses campaign finance reform, an end to gerrymandering, ending special interests and lobbying, imposing term limits on all candidates and ending the stranglehold of the two parties and letting third parties on the ballots and into the debates.

A: I believe that by instituting term limits on congress we come one major step closer to cleaning the filth sitting in Washington. The term limits would still have to come with restrictions on becoming a lobbyist afterwards.

A: More effort needs to be put into reforming the public education system to allow better conditioning of America’s future through scholarship and career training. The educational system also needs much more funding to allow teachers to have a more livable wage.

A: In my observation, the reason why there is a lacking in good candidates or why the most qualified doesn’t get elected is because modern media tends to treat politics more like a sport. With a combination of increasingly more polarized nature of politics, more extreme groups arise on both sides of the political spectrum. This also leads to a candidates getting support off of the the name of their party alone rather than what they stand for: just like how one supports a sports team.

A: In recent years, gerrymandering has been one of the things to guarantee a political party’s, generally republican party, seats in local and national government. Reevaluating the rules on how districts are drawn and having them make more sense geographically can make a more fair election possible.

A: If the United States wants to be the leader of the free world, it needs to act responsibly on the issue of climate change. Although climate change will affect the United States less than other parts of the world, we can’t claim to be the leader of that world, if we allow large swaths of people to be severely impacted by climate change. And, parts of the United States, in particular the Gulf Coast and the South, are going to experience real health and financial stress due to climate change. Those costs – financial and emotional – will be bore by all Americans and more so if nothing is done to mitigate climate change. The opportunity cost of having to pour resources into climate change affected areas, resources that could be allocated to better purpose, are only going to grow larger, if we do nothing.

A: There really are too many issues that have become important to pick just one. But gerrymandering is an immense problem that stacks the government. Rather than representing real people & real districts, we have created ridiculous districts that make no sense & have very little in common. We should divide our states/counties, etc. in ways that make sense. Use counties (or combine counties); divide counties by region, etc. So many constructs of our government were created/are leftover from years gone by. We need to be more inclusive & more logical in our approach. Otherwise we continue to be divisive.

A: We have to legislatively overrule Citizens United and get big money out of politics. We need campaign spending limits and an equalization among candidates for the same position. Local school board election campaigns can run in the hundreds of thousands of dollars – that is RIDICULOUS. Corporations are NOT people. They do NOT have feelings, etc. They are a legal construct designed long ago to encourage people to take risks & start businesses without fear of losing their personal assets. They don’t have political views or religious views. The people who own/run/work at them do – but they are individuals & must be treated as such with respect to elections. Without significant changes to how we permit elections to be financed, we are moving more & more towards government by the already-wealthy. And those folks truly have no clue what the average American faces day-in and day-out.

A: Public education is the foundation of our democracy. Ensuring that ALL young people have access to a high quality public education is imperative to continuing our country. True public education is available to everyone & is accountable to the public – charter schools are NOT held to the same accountability nor do they necessarily educate everyone who comes to their door. Many children suffer from learning disabilities or other conditions that severely impact their ability to access the old-fashioned type of public education. We need to ensure that public education is available to all, and we need to look to our professional educators to help figure out what changes need to be made to the system to ensure that we do our best by our children. We need to:

Re-professionalize teaching/teachers – they have spent years training & learning their craft – they are not the enemy; they can help create the answers.
Hold ALL schools that receive taxpayer dollars to the same financial & social accountability requirements (serving every single child who comes thru the door, etc.)
Get private money/big corporate money out of school board elections (and all elections, really)
Ensure children with learning challenges have access to strong public education – meaningful education – and that schools that receive taxpayer dollars actually follow the laws on these matters
Likewise, we need to ensure that we are challenging our most intelligent students – simply because they already meet grade level expectations is NOT a reason to let them languish
    Increase funding of public education
Address poverty – it is the single biggest challenge our children face – your economic status currently tells us how you will score on standardized tests, etc. That shouldn’t be the case.

Q: Please tell us a brief example of what position you would have us take?
A: For the Modern Whig party to be successful, it must pull those from both sides of the spectrum. It’s focus on inclusion of various ideas and stances is a great start to this and can be used to strengthen the party. It is important (I believe) for this party to stand for bringing citizens together for healthy dialogue, rather than separating based on how those people identify themselves on the political spectrum.
