A Time to Serve

Perhaps no value ranks higher in the mind of a Modern Whig than the commitment to authentic public service. And, as a party founded by veterans, that commitment to service probably finds no higher expression than our desire to do all we can for those who have served, or are currently serving, our country in the armed forces. Today, on Memorial Day 2015, we are proud to announce our Veterans Volunteer Initiative -- the first phase in an ongoing process to make that desire a reality.

You can find information on the VVI housed under our new Veterans tab on our website. This initial step is simple enough, as you will see. But we decided to include an entire tab devoted exclusively to Veterans on our newly-minted website because we fully expect there will be a lot more to come, and future programs are sure to be more intensive once we have the personnel to execute them.

We'll have a lot to say on policy, too -- regarding both our veterans and those who are currently serving in our armed forces. In our view, those who have volunteered to defend our liberty and our way of life deserve the adequate and unwavering support of their MWP_Owl.pngfellow citizens. Each one of us owes each of them so much; Memorial Day is a reminder of the risks they run when they sign on the dotted line.

Our goal is to have much more to offer in terms of service opportunities going forward, and we hope to be able to enter the next phase of this particular initiative by Veterans Day. We think that's a fitting pair of bookends -- to start on the day when we honor those whom we lost, and move ahead to the next step on the day when we honor those who are still with us. But it's more than mere symbolism: far too many of our veterans are struggling, even to the point of homelessness, and for them time is of the essence. The Veterans Volunteer Initiative is a way to start doing something to help, and right away.

The key to all of this, of course, is you. The Modern Whig Party is designed to be a platform for action -- a means for The People to once again take the reins of their government, to be sure, but also a way for each of us to connect with service opportunities at the local, state and national levels. Our aim is to facilitate what we believe is the natural American desire to pitch in; we hope and expect our members and supporters will do just that, and we're starting in a place near and dear to our hearts.

We believe we owe an invaluable debt to those who have fallen, one which is impossible to pay in full. But we can at least make the effort to try. And we think the place to begin is by supporting and assisting our surviving veterans -- the brothers and sisters in arms of those who gave the "last full measure of devotion." We hope you will join with us in this initiative, and in the ones to come. And we hope you will come up with suggestions on even more ways we all can serve.
